During our sourcing trip to Colombia last August, one cup on the cupping table demanded our attention. Amidst a sea of samples, this coffee jumped out with vibrant florality and a distinct, sweet tangerine note that we couldn't ignore.

We were thrilled to discover this standout lot was a Pink Bourbon produced by Luis Jacanamijoy in the Nariño region. While we haven't carried a Pink Bourbon in quite some time, this variety has become legendary in the specialty world over the last five years.

For a long time, the variety was thought to be a recessive mutation of the Red Bourbon lineage (hence the name). However, recent genetic testing has revealed a fascinating twist: Pink Bourbon actually traces its lineage back to Ethiopian Landrace varieties and Typica. This genetic background explains exactly why we fell in love with this cup—it possesses that delicate, tea-like florality often missing from traditional Bourbons, backed by deep, rustic sugar sweetness.
