Active volcanoes are very good for coffee quality because the surrounding soils are nourished by the annual shedding of ashes. But active volcanoes present a clear risk of devastation to a farmer that grows near them. Maura Basante has decided to risk it and grows her coffee in the vicinity of an active, 5,000 year old volcano called Galeras, in Ancuya. She stays because the quality of her coffee is outstanding and she is able to receive a premium from us for it. While the risk is not necessarily sustainable for her she refuses to leave so the most that we can do is make sure that she is well compensated for that risk.
When you drink this coffee reflect on what Maura is risking for you. Savor it. This coffee is nothing short of superb with big red apple and brown sugar sweetness, boasting a mellow acidity that invites cup after cup.
